Air Conditioning and Heating Systems

Most modern homes have air conditioning and heating systems (HVAC) in place when they are designed and constructed. These systems are designed to do more than just keep the inhabitants of the building comfortable, they also provide a means of cleaning the air that is recirculating in it.

In the early days of HVAC systems, most only have a fiberglass filter near the air intake of the main unit. This has since been improved upon by utilizing HEPA filters in their place. This has helped to reduce the amount of dust and debris in the air recirculation system. The advantages of this better filtering system are not only cleaner air to breathe for the occupants of the building, but also less dust that will accumulate on all surfaces.

Since most HVAC systems have humidity control devices in them, there was also a need to address the mold spores and fungus that began to multiply in the duct work and air itself. There are two ways to address these contaminants. There are the UV light sterilizers and the ozone sterilizers. Both do good jobs at destroying molds and fungus. An additional benefit has been reported since testing on these systems started a few years back. This is the destruction of airborne viruses that cause illness in humans.

When comparing the different systems, do not be taken by the advertisement of a system that cleans the air by 99.97%. This is just the contribution of the HEPA filter alone. There are more to the process of cleaning the air in air conditioning and heating systems (HVAC), than just the filter alone.
